Our first release on our label, back in February of 2016, was the 30th anniversary of Heir Apparent's debut album, Graceful Inheritance. It was a great success, and now we are excited to welcome them back to give the same care and quality for their follow up album. Originally released in 1989, Heir Apparent's second album, One Small Voice, is now getting the reissue treatment in its intended form with its intended song lineup and artwork. N.W. Metalworx Music is proud to announce that we will be releasing this special 30th anniversary edition. Production is planned to start later this summer/early fall, and we hope to have the LP and CD out by the end of 2020.
The success of the band's debut release, Graceful Inheritance, on Black Dragon Records in France in 1986 (and subsequent European tour with Savage Grace that year), led to it becoming the first CD ever released by an independent record company in Europe. In September 1986, Terry recruited keyboardist Michael Jackson to the band and they began writing new material. Original singer Paul Davidson had to step down from the lead singer slot in early 1987, and they found Steve Benito from the Portland metal band French Kiss to fill his shoes.
Heir Apparent successfully debuted the new lineup on July 4, 1987, and followed with a handful of shows up through the summer of 1988 (including opening for David Lee Roth at the Seattle Center Coliseum and for Fates Warning at Meekers’ Landing). In October 1988, the band finally landed a joint U.S. deal with Metal Blade and Capitol Records. Heir Apparent was signed to a $600,000, seven-album deal, and the future looked bright. They now had a bigger record contract with a major label behind them that could really break the band on a wider scale.
Unfortunately, dissension in the band began to derail the cohesion during the recording process. The founder, leader and main songwriter, Terry Gorle, had been the primary source of financing the band for 4 years, and after signing the deal he requested that band members enter into a business partnership to take on shared responsibilities. The band refused, and an undercurrent of alienation began that kept Terry from being informed of several vocal tracking and mixing sessions which ultimately took the album over budget. The album was overproduced with layers of keyboards and vocals dominating the mix, and the guitars notably buried. Although the band had recorded enough Heir Apparent material for the album, three songs from Steve’s previous band were included on the original release. Terry was ousted by his bandmates in March of 1989, before the album was even released. Terry was also cut out of the publishing by the record company and his former band, who proceeded to operate under the name Heir Apparent illegally. Terry was forced to file a lawsuit to retain his trade name and attempt resolving band debts left in his name. By the time the album finally came out in June of 1989, news of the coup, the impending lawsuit, and the replacement the band leader dampened any enthusiasm in supporting the release. The remaining Heir Apparent members had replaced Gorle in the lineup with a young, hotshot guitarist named Klaus Derendorf, but their plans for touring around the album sputtered out after a short Western US tour with Crimson Glory. The lawsuit was settled by September of 1990, but the damage was done.
Despite these issues, One Small Voice was still well-regarded as a solid release in the progressive metal world. They were ahead of their time with that type of music, both with their debut and this follow up record, and have continued to have a fanbase around the world, play various festivals and even released a brand new album in recent years (The View From Below). In the year 2000, Terry Gorle sought to remix One Small Voice in collaboration with Metal Blade Records, but the tapes were missing and have never been recovered. So, Terry re-recorded his guitar parts to blend them over the original stereo tracks, while also making several other enhancements during a remastering process improving the overall mix. The photos including Terry were featured (he was cut out of the original album picture and thanked only for contributions of "Guitar parts by"). Additionally, the artwork was restored to what it was intended to be with artist Matt Bazemore's original Heir Apparent logo and slightly refocused. What was initially a really good album, is even better now. This special edition only includes songs written by Heir Apparent, including one track never released on the original vinyl.
We at N.W Metalworx are happy to present this restored, remixed and remastered album as originally intended, on both vinyl LP and compact disc, with the band's song sequencing preferences, the cover artwork as intended and extensive liner notes, rare photos and more!
Slated for a late Fall/early Winter 2020 release. Pre-orders planned to start when the album is in production in early Fall of 2020 at http://nwmetalworxmusic.com
